Whapier

WhatsApp for online shops

Order updates people actually read, abandoned carts recovered, and the returns conversation that does not go to email.

Where the value is

Order emails go unopened and "where is my order" is the most expensive support ticket there is because it is asked so often. WhatsApp fixes the second problem by making the answer arrive before the question. The abandoned-cart use case gets the attention, but shipping updates are where the support saving is.

What to send

Order and shipping updates Utility

Confirmed, dispatched, out for delivery, delivered. Utility category, so cheap, and it removes most of the reason anyone contacts you at all.

Abandoned cart recovery Marketing

One message, an hour or two after abandonment, offering to help rather than pressing. Marketing category, needs opt-in, and works far better than the same message by email.

Back in stock Marketing

A message to people who asked to be told. High intent, low complaint rate, because they requested it explicitly.

Returns and exchanges Service

The conversation that would have been six emails over three days, done in one thread with photographs.

Failed payment recovery Utility

A card declining on a subscription renewal is silent churn. A message with a link to update it recovers customers who never knew they had left.

Utility messages cost considerably less than marketing ones, and from 1 October 2026 replies within 24 hours of a customer messaging you are billed at the utility rate after 1,000 free service messages per number each month — the rates are here.

Templates you can submit

Copy the body, replace the placeholders with your own fields, and submit under the category shown. Each variable needs a sample value before Meta will review it. A template is approved per language, so translate and submit once per market.

order_confirmed

Utility
Thank you for your order {{1}}. We have it and we are packing it now. You will get another message when it ships, and you can reply here if anything needs changing.

The invitation to reply is doing work: a change of address caught before dispatch costs nothing, and after dispatch costs a redelivery.

order_shipped

Utility
Your order {{1}} is on its way. You can follow it at {{2}} and it should arrive by {{3}}. Reply here if it does not turn up.

This is the message that removes most "where is my order" tickets. It is also cheap: utility category.

cart_abandoned

Marketing
Hello {{1}}, you left {{2}} in your basket at {{3}}. It is still there if you want it — reply here if anything was unclear and we will help.

One message. A second one is what turns a recoverable cart into a block.

back_in_stock

Marketing
Hello {{1}}, the {{2}} you asked about is back in stock at {{3}}. Reply BUY and we will send you a link, or ignore this if you have moved on.

Only to people who asked. The request is the opt-in and it is what keeps the complaint rate near zero.

payment_failed

Utility
Hello {{1}}, the payment for your order {{2}} did not go through. You can try again at {{3}}, or reply here and we will sort it out with you.

Utility, because it is about a transaction they already made. Do not add an offer to it or it becomes marketing.

If Meta rejects one, every rejection reason is explained here.

What to measure

Decide these before you start, and take a baseline. Otherwise the programme gets judged on whether it felt worthwhile.

  • "Where is my order" tickets per hundred orders
  • Abandoned carts recovered, against the email flow it replaced
  • Failed payments recovered within 48 hours
  • Cost per recovered order, which the cost dashboard gives you directly

Before the first send

Meta requires opt-in and, in the EU, so does the law — being a customer is not the same as having agreed to be messaged on WhatsApp. The two guides worth reading first are collecting opt-in that holds up and GDPR and WhatsApp marketing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the WhatsApp Business API for online shops?
Yes. The requirements are the same as for any business: a phone number not currently on WhatsApp, a verified business at Meta, at least one approved template, and opt-in from the people you intend to message.
Do I need a separate template for every message?
You need one approved template per message type and per language, with placeholders for the parts that change. One reminder template covers every appointment; you do not submit anything per customer.
Which of these messages cost money?
Any message that starts a conversation, at its category rate. Utility templates — reminders, confirmations, updates — are considerably cheaper than marketing ones. Replies within 24 hours of a customer messaging you are free until 30 September 2026; from 1 October 2026 Meta bills them at the utility rate after the first 1,000 service messages per business phone number each month.
Can I message customers who have not opted in?
No. Meta requires opt-in and, in the EU, so does the law. Having someone as a customer is not the same as having their permission to message them on WhatsApp — the channel is part of what they have to agree to.
